Gospel Artists, Not so Holy!

  • The Gospel Music industry is made up of a host of different artists and genre’s. There are Gospel rappers like Lecrae, Trip Lee, and Sho Baracka who exclaim the good news of Jesus through the art form known as hip hop. There are hundreds of gospel singers, who sing of the glory of Jesus. There are also many musicians who are like the psalmists David, who play their instruments with skill for the cause of Christ. The question is, where does your spirituality have to be in order to be apart of the gospel music industry? Or should i say accepted into the industry. What is the standard? Many would argue that you need to be holy and actively pursuing Jesus instead of sin, as this is what the word of God says. On the contrary, others would argue that “we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory” thus people make mistakes. Many of the “saints” have been extremely harsh on gospel artists who have fallen in deep sin. Tye Tribbett cheated on his wife, Leandria Johnson recently had a child out of wed lock, she says “You get pregnant out of wedlock and the whole world turns against you, That’s how it felt. But you’ve got to keep moving.” Mary Mary is not gospel enough, Clutch Magazine writes “Mary Mary still experiences the occasional old-fashioned churchy side-eye when their melodies or wardrobes seem to skirt a little too much”, Tonex is reportedly gay, and Kim Burrell is frequently featured with secular artists. Although the human race is terribly flawed, it seems to be our nature to make people “holier than thou” in our minds. G Craig Lewis writes in his blog: “This new music is a watered down, warmed over, lack luster copy of secular music.  They don’t get inspired by God to write, but they are inspired by what the devil is doing in secular music”
One of Craigs followers also writes: ” I was just talking to some people and we were discussing why we don’t buy gospel CDs.  Because they don’t glorify God.  The artists don’t glorify God in their lives nor songs.”
Tiffanie writes this statement online at Clutchmagazine.com in regards to Mary MaryWhen you’re truly living in submission to Christ, you ARE different from everyone else.Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

So how should gospel music artists who have fallen to temptation be treated? 1 John 4 and 7 says ” Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” To be a christian is to be a lover of people, despite their flaws and shortcomings.
